In portable devices, while other motion sensors can provide information about your position and velocity, a reliable magnetometer is needed to determine which direction you are facing. Like a compass, a magnetometer accurately measures the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. Bosch has introduced the BMM350, a 16-bit 3-axis magnetometer that extends battery life by determining direction while consuming minimal power. According to the company, the magnetometer opens up many possibilities, including detecting head orientation for immersive 3D audio experiences and reducing pixel lag in augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) applications to improve user satisfaction and prevent motion sickness.
According to a company press release, the sensor is ideal for indoor navigation scenarios where global positioning system (GPS) is unavailable. The device's compact dimensions of only 1.28mm x 1.28mm x 0.5mm make it virtually invisible. It fits wearables, hearables, smartphones, tablets, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices, and all types of vehicles. The magnetometer uses innovative Tunneling Magnetoresistance (TMR) technology with a unique field shock recovery capability. This feature enhances the device's resistance to external magnetic fields, ensuring high precision at all times. The performance of the new device is significantly improved compared to the previous generation of magnetometers.
The sensor is said to consume significantly less power, with an average typical current consumption of just 200 μA at a 100 Hz data rate, 20 times lower than its predecessor. When integrated into smartphones and tablets, MEMS sensors stabilize images, detect gestures and activity, and count steps. Built-in MEMS sensors allow users to operate smart devices through gesture or voice input. The sensor has high sensitivity and resolution, enabling it to detect small changes in magnetic fields.
