Bosch will demonstrate a unified software stack at the CES 2024 show in January as a key step toward software-defined cars, but declined to reveal further technical details ahead of the launch.
The cockpit and ADAS integration platform combines automated parking and lane detection with personalized navigation and voice assistance. Along with standalone software, such as Video Sense for surround sensing, automakers can add modules and assemble scalable designs combining hardware components from their own supply chains.
This avoids the need for separate modules and therefore uses less space and wiring, thus reducing costs.
"We want to decrease the complexity of automotive electronic systems, and make them as safe as possible at the same time. By presenting our new on-board computer platform at CES, we are taking an important step in this direction. Our medium-term goal is to bring more autonomous driving functions to the road, both in the compact and midsize car segments." said Dr. Markus Heyn, Member of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch and Chairman of Bosch Mobility.
Bosch has also developed a unified software stack that can run on a range of different SoCs.
While Bosch won't comment on which chips it supports, there are low-power embedded SoC chips. For example, NXP Semiconductor's S32 series, Renesas Electronics' R-car and Ambarella's CV series, as well as high-performance Thor and Orin Nvidia chips.
"Central on-board computers are at the heart of software-defined cars. In the future, they will control all areas of modern vehicles and reduce the current large number of individual control units," said Dr. Markus Heyn. "Our software runs on chips from different manufacturers. Software and hardware are allowed to be decoupled from each other."
Overall, Bosch expects sales of in-car computers for infotainment and driver assistance to reach 3 billion euros by 2026. It is expected that the overall market for automotive software will reach about 200 billion euros by 2030, of which sales of infotainment and driver assistance systems will reach 32 billion euros.
